Carlos de Liz-Texeira Branquinho

He worked in Budapest in 1944 as the Portugal ambassador’s deputy, and got permission from the government of Portugal to sign and issue safe conducts to all those who had relatives in Portugal, Brazil or Portuguese colonies.
He was authorized to issue 500 of these documents, but it is believed that the real number is around 800.
Several protected houses were established offer a shelter to these people, and the houses under the patronage of Portugal remained untouched – despite the constant raids by the Nazis.
